CIRSD Delegation at the SDSN Leadership Council Meeting
The President of the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) Vuk Jeremić, participated in the sixth meeting of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Leadership Council in Paris on June 4-5. The meeting was chaired by the director of the SDSN professor Jeffrey Sachs and the French Foreign Minister’s Special Representative for the Paris 2015 Conference of Parties (COP21) Laurence Tubiana. CIRSD president Jeremić was accompanied by CIRSD board members Miguel Angel Moratinos, Shaukat Aziz, and Marcos Kyprianou, all of whom are memebrs of the Leadership Council. Also attending was CIRSD Program Director Nikola Jovanović.
The main topic of the sixth meeting of the SDSN Leadership Council pertained to offering adequate support to UN Member States to successfully conclude the ongoing negotiations on climate change and Sustainable Development Goals by the end of 2015. One of the aims of the meeting was to explore different means by which the SDSN could help these processes—ranging from coming up with new modalities for financing development, advancing the deep decarbonization process of the economy, and instigating a more robust private sector involvement in sustainable development projects, to organizing online education on sustainable development.
Jeremić spoke at the central part of the meeting, suggesting a number of initiatives to motivate some of the key global actors to more actively participate in the process.
CIRSD Program Director Nikola Jovanović participated in the part of the meeting devoted to regional initiatives. He noted that the joint CIRSD and SDSN international conference entitled “Climate Change and the Green Economy” held in November 2014, represented a positive example of regional efforts.
SDSN is one of the world's most influential organizations in its field, whose research has so far largely contributed to creating the UN’s post-2015 development agenda. The SDSN Leadership Council oversees the work of the SDSN, and is comprised of prominent academics, scientists, and businessmen involved the field of sustainable development.
