International Conference on Climate Change and the Green Economy
International Conference on Climate Change and the Green Economy
The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) are jointly organizing an international conference in Belgrade, Serbia on 20th November 2014, focusing on the nexus between climate change and the green economy.
The conference will bring government ministers, diplomats, international officials, business leaders, academics, and scientists from Southeast Europe and beyond to address a distinguished audience. The event will take place against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to shape the UN post-2015 sustainable development agenda (Rio+20) and complete the high-level climate change talks (COP21) scheduled to take place in Paris in December 2015.
The “Climate Change and the Green Economy” conference will aim to achieve three interrelated goals. First, to instill in Southeast European politicians, civil servants, business leaders, opinion-makers, and the wider public a sense of the planetary emergency descending upon us. Second, to encourage stakeholders in Southeast Europe to participate more assertively in determining the post-2015 development agenda and the COP21 climate change negotiations. Third, to explore the ways to make the green economy a key vehicle for growth, employment, and poverty reduction in the region by examining how to encourage market-based solutions to environment-driven challenges.
Overcoming the effects of climate change through the transition to a low-carbon, green economy will require the establishment of a comprehensive global public-private partnership, involving major stakeholders including governments, industry, academic and scientific communities, and international organizations working in concert.
