On September 22nd, CIRSD President Vuk Jeremić participated in the “2014 Summit on the Future of Europe at Harvard.”
Co-organized by the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University and the Berggruen Institute on Governance, this invitation-only conference aimed to deepen the debate on critical challenges facing Europe, as well as generate ideas that support effective policy responses. The Summit consisted of three panels and included academic speakers such as Dr. Joseph Nye, Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard Kennedy School; and Dr. Richard Cooper, Maurits C. Boas Professor of International Economics, Harvard University.
The central panel was entitled “Europe’s Role in a Multipolar World” and featured remarks by CIRSD President Vuk Jeremić, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, and Italy’s former Prime Minister Mario Monti. It was moderated by the renowned Harvard historian and best-selling author Dr. Niall Ferguson.
Jeremić stressed that Europe has to lead in enacting the UN post-2015 sustainable development agenda and in the ongoiing climate change negotiations. “In Copenhagen in 2009, Europe was marginalized in the final rounds of talks. This must not be allowed to happen again at COP21.To lead the way, a unified Europe must engage actively and forcefully,” Jeremić said.
