The President of the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) Vuk Jeremić participated in the Lisbon Conference on Global Development. This international conference focused on issues pertaining to financing for development, the sustainability of key economic policies, and current economic and social trends in the European Union. The Lisbon Conference was organized by a network of eight different Portuguese institutes and think-tanks, coordinated by Portugal’s former Foreign Minister Luis Amado.
During his visit to Portugal, Jeremić met with the Vice-Prime Minister Paulo Portas, with whom he exchanged views on key issues concerning global affairs, and examined the progress made toward adopting the UN post-2015 development agenda and the climate change negotiations.
In his remarks to the conference, CIRSD President Jeremić underscored that developed countries should devote additional efforts in promoting clean energy technologies and forging comprehensive public-private partnerships in the developing world. Jeremić further said that the United Nations could play a determinative role in the near future by helping Member States coordinate efforts at achieving sustainable development, reducing social inequalities and diminishing the effects of overwhelming pollution.
The conference in Lisbon gathered a significant number of government officials, business leaders and prominent intellectuals. The event featured remarks by the former President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, and the sitting European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica.
