Jeremić Speaks at the World Policy Conference in Seoul
The President of the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) Vuk Jeremić is participating in the traditional annual World Policy Conference, held in Seoul between December 8th and 10th. The conference was officially opened with remarks from South Korea’s President Park Geun-Hye.
The event gathered a significant number of prominent international officials, business leaders and diplomats. The working sessions focused on the key aspects of ongoing geopolitical and geo-economic processes around the world.
Jeremić spoke on the panel entitled Energy and Climate Change, which also featured remarks by the French Foreign Minister Laurant Fabius.
In his remarks to the conference, CIRSD President reiterated that the two critical UN led processes will reach their tipping points in 2015. This pertains to the ongoing negotiations regarding the post-2015 agenda and efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement on climate change. He noted that the deteriorating state of relations between key global stakeholders could have a disastrous effect on the final outcome of the aforementioned negotiations.
Jeremić said that all interested parties need to make additional efforts in order to avoid the new Cold War over Ukraine, and voiced his concern with regard to increasing tensions in East Asia and the further militarization of the region’s local stakeholders.
CIRSD President also argued that the United Nations should play a determinative role in conducting the new development agenda, as well as overseeing and facilitating progress in the negotiations on climate change.
The World Policy Conference is organized by the Paris and Brussels based French Institute for International Affairs (IFRI).

Eighty years after its founding, the UN finds itself at a critical juncture. Its purpose is on trial, and its mission urgently requires recalibration. The world it inherited from the scorches of the Second World War no longer exists, yet many of the organisation’s practices remain rooted in a bygone era – out of sync with today’s realities and detached from those it was created to serve.
